Punjab Naming A Land

Every great civilisation is in dialogue with its landscape. Egypt conversed with the Nile, Mesopotamia with the Tigris and Euphrates, and China with the Yellow River. But Punjab is perhaps unique in that its very name is a geographical confession — a declaration that the land cannot be understood apart from the waters that define it. Panj-Āb: five waters. The name carries within it both a map and a philosophy.Unlike most place names that derive from the name of a tribe, a ruler, or a mythological event, the word Punjab is purely topographic. It names not a people but a territory, not a dynasty but a drainage basin. This is no accident. For millennia before any empire laid claim to this plain, the five rivers — flowing roughly parallel from northeast to southwest, descending from the Himalayan massif toward the Indus — had been shaping the soil, the climate, the movement of populations, and the contours of human imagination across the region we now call Punjab.

Prologue: When Rivers Have Personalities

There is a particular kind of knowledge that belongs to a river and to nowhere else. It is not the knowledge of the map-maker, who sees a river as a blue line on parchment. Nor is it the knowledge of the engineer, who measures its flow in cubic metres per second. It is the knowledge of the person who has lived by a river for a lifetime — who knows the sound the water makes before the monsoon breaks, who recognises the smell of the first flood, who can read the colour of the current and know whether the snow is melting fast in the mountains upstream. Punjab has been formed, above all, by five such bodies of knowledge, accumulated over five millennia beside five rivers that are as distinct from one another as five human beings.
